How to Make Your Own Tarot Card Deck

I've had a longtime involvement in tarot cards, but I've always had a tough time memorizing all of the different card meanings and learning a fashion of recalling them so that reading them would actually exist a meaningful experience.

Only several years agone I discovered a style to make tarot cards more meaningful to me. By creating my own set of tarot cards, I could choose images that actually fit with the archetypes of the cards as I understood them. This actually added a richness to the experience of working with the tarot and even though I never completed the set, I find that the feel has stuck with me equally I work with standard decks similar the Rider-Waite tarot today.

So if you would like to brand your own tarot cards, only stuck for ideas on how to do that, then hopefully my experience can provide you with some pointers on which direction to take. I'll show you lot some of the cards I fabricated and give you a few suggestions for different ways that you can work with the cards yourself to assist yous make a tarot deck that is rich with personal meaning to you.

Before you brainstorm working on your ain Tarot deck, it's a good thought of have some reference material handy and then you tin look up card meanings for yourself. I really similar the Jungian approach to tarot equally presented in Jung and Tarot, but information technology's a big book and can be pretty heavy going.

Joan Bunning'south Learning the Tarot course is extremely popular and very useful. Yous can either buy the book then you take it with y'all, or you can cheque out Joan Bunning's Tarot grade online. The entire course is online for free. There are also tons of other tarot sites to bank check out card meanings and then you can just look up individual cards whenever y'all are working on them.

Besides, I consider Eden Gray'due south book The Consummate Guide to Tarot, to exist indispensible. It is a tarot archetype and very succinct. You will go a lot out of it.

How I Made My Tarot Deck

The impetus for creating my own tarot deck was my obsession with Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

A lot of the evidence'southward characters (and the characters on Affections) struck me as plumbing equipment very well into specific archetypes and the episodes lent a lot of opportunities as well, then I decided to work on a Major Arcana deck based upon Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I completed 15 cards out of 22 before I ran out of steam and moved on to another project.

Fifty-fifty today, I find myself frequently casting pop culture icons in my caput equally different tarot archetypes, so if I were working on making a unique tarot deck today, I could probably create a fun celebrity-based deck. I've always thought Eminem would be the perfect Fool for the Tarot.*g*

And so what do you recall? If you are ready to create your own tarot deck, you need to think nearly what you want to work with in terms of images.

Finding Inspiration

Over the by xx years or so, at that place has literally been a tarot explosion, so while the Passenger-Waite used to be the be all, end all in tarot cards, in that location are now thousands of unlike tarot decks.

If you want to look at other cards for inspiration, Aeclectic.cyberspace has photos of hundreds of different tarot carte decks that you can look at.

One of my favorites is the Victoria Regina Tarot which was created collaging Victorian engravings. I like to wait through Aeclectic's listings of unpublished tarot decks to meet what other amateur tarot card creators are doing.

That said, you lot will observe inspiration all around you for making your ain tarot. Consider your favorite movies, tv shows, and books. Or even your favorite music. Whatever it is that inspires you. While you are working on your deck, proceed a small notebook handy at all times and then whenever inspiration hits y'all tin jot down some ideas.

How to Create Your Own Tarot Images

If y'all can paint or draw, you are all set. If you aren't an artist and you can't pigment or draw, relax. That'due south why they invented Photoshop and digital cameras.

I can't fifty-fifty draw a straight line. My artistic urges are by and large spent taking photos and manipulating either mine or other people'south images -- either by using photograph editing software or by doing collage if I want to work with my easily.

You can see my Artist Trading Cards where I've basically done both -- some cards are based on photoshop/collage and others are my photography/collage. Some of those cards include photos I tore out of vintage magazines and then scanned into my calculator and so I could edit them.

If y'all can point a camera or tear a picture out of a magazine, you can create your own tarot cards, even if you tin can't draw a straight line.

While you can sit with a agglomeration of magazines and simply tear out images that strike you lot, the net has certainly made it very like shooting fish in a barrel to observe exactly what you are looking for. Just don't get bogged downwardly in the chase.

When I was searching for the right image of Cordelia to utilise for The Empress, I must have looked at over 500 photographs of the actress Charisma Carpenter before I finally settled on one of the offset images I'd saved to my difficult drive.

Recall Outside the Box

If you take any skills in other types of arts & crafts, why not use that to your tarot creation. Textiles represent a lot of dissimilar opportunities for creating a tarot likewise. Think what you could accomplish with applique or quilting.

If you lot do cross-stitch or embroidery, there are some templates that you can work from that might spark some ideas for coming upward with your own embroidered or cantankerous-stitched tarot. Take a wait at these designs besides.

There is no reason to restrict yourself to working at tarot bill of fare size.... anything you create can either be photographed or scanned and so reduced in size for printing onto cardstock. And so if you want to create large scale mixed media pieces, you should definitely do information technology!

Make a Collage Tarot Deck

If you don't want to spend all of your time in forepart of your reckoner, and so collage is a slap-up mode to go if you tin can't describe or pigment. If I were doing another deck, I would likely practice a collage deck. One time you are done creating, you lot can always browse the collaged cards and reprint them so the cards won't exist so bulky.

For collage, you can do what I do with my ATCs. Get a pack of playing cards and just paper over the hearts, clubs and spades. If y'all want a traditional tarot sized deck, you can get a bare set of tarot card backs and paste your collage pieces directly onto them.

Or yous could even just employ a packet of index cards. You could use a scissors to shape the edges of the cards once y'all were washed with the collages. Very easy.

Take a wait at the video below for some inspiration on putting together a tarot deck. As you tin run into, it doesn't need to exist washed with a lot of circuitous images. Fifty-fifty just one or two simple images that is meaningful to you tin can help you brand a very personalized deck of images that you immediately empathise.

I used Joan Bunning'due south piece of work when I was a beginner. Another swell one is Janina Renee, Tarot For A New Generation.
